What Makes Greystone Mansion Special?

Standing in the heart of Beverly Hills, Greystone Mansion, also known as the Doheny Estate, represents LA’s famous opulence and extravagance. Built in the 1920s for the wealthy oil-tycoon and his family, the property has witnessed a myriad of intriguing events and tragedy, firmly embedding itself in the annals of Los Angeles history.

After bearing witness to tragedies within the family and changing ownership a few times, the property eventually came to be owned by the city of Beverly Hills. The city became focused on preserving this historic space. They also sought to open it up to the public – allowing the land to be rented out to various parties – from individuals seeking a wedding venue to filming crews hoping to capitalize on the estate’s beautiful landscape. Now, Greystone Mansion is a popular tourist destination, allowing guests to immerse themselves in its storied past and timeless elegance.

What to know before you visit Greystone Mansion, Beverly Hills

A rarity for the Los Angeles/Beverly Hills area, the park and parking lot are free. According to the website’s posted hours, the park is open from 10am to 6pm daily. However, in my visit I noticed they wanted everyone to leave once the sun set – just something to keep in mind when planning out your own trip. Depending on how much you like to walk around and explore, I would plan to spend at least 45 minutes to an hour on the grounds (assuming you are only exploring outside of the house).

What is parking like at Greystone Mansion?

Parking is an absolute DREAM for Beverly Hills. Not only is parking free, but there is one large, flat lot with several signs to guide you. From the parking lot, a few steps onward and you’ll find yourself at one of many stairs leading you to various parts of the grounds.

On my first visit, I did miss the entrance to the parking lot and had to loop around. There is a sign on the street that says “Greystone Park entrance”, but it wasn’t visible from the direction I came from. Be sure to use 905 Loma Vista Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 and not just search up the mansion’s name (which was my mistake). However, even with missing the sign my first go around, it was fairly easy to spot the second time.

What to do on your Greystone Mansion visit

Most of the time, you’ll be able to walk around the property and check out the various gardens, architecture, and views (there is an amazing view of the city). There are several winding staircases and uneven pathways which can be a little slick on rainy days – just to help you plan accordingly. On select days, you’ll be able to go into the house but you will have to register in advance. If you’re planning your visit around a date when the house is open for self-guided tours, you can learn more at the city’s website here. Occasionally they do other special events that you may be interested in checking out. They also host private events, so parts of the grounds may be blocked off depending on whether or not something has been booked.

A little note for all photographers and videographers – photography and filming is by permit only. If you’re hoping to use the location for any photoshoots or the like, you’ll need to take a few extra steps. However, their website clearly states that souvenir photography (aka the snaps you take to show off your travels to your loved ones) is perfectly fine.

Lastly, since it is a registered historic landmark, there are a few other things to keep in mind. Notably, the park prohibits picnicking and only allows ADA service animals.
