Buena Park is a hidden gem for tourist fun. A short drive away from popular destinations like Knott’s Berry Farm, Disneyland, the Source OC, and Medieval Times, Porto’s is the perfect stop-off for a little refueling and snack re-stocking.

Porto’s has been a local favorite for decades (ask anyone who lives in the area how they feel about Porto’s potato balls). And with all that love has come continued expansion and growth. Today, Porto’s has 6 locations in Southern California – and counting!

If you’re a Porto’s newbie or looking for another bakery to visit the next time you’re in town, read on for a few tips from someone who adores a good baked treat!

Meet the Porto’s: The Family that Started It All

Rosa Porto, a fierce and resilient woman with a penchant for baking, is the heart and beginning of Porto’s Bakery. After losing her job while living in Cuba in the midst of political unrest, Rosa used a home-baking business to support her family. Eventually, they moved to the US, where Rosa continued to sell delicious treats from her house. By 1976, Rosa was able to open a bakery store front in Los Angeles’s Echo Park.

Once a home-kitchen operation, Porto’s has now grown to culinary prominence with 6+ locations in Southern California. While the menu has expanded to include a variety of flavors and styles, the bakery’s cuban-roots continue to shine through and delight guests from all over the world.

The Logistics

Locations

Porto’s, which once started as a small bakery in Echo Park, has now grown to several LARGE locations throughout Southern California. Today, I’ll be focusing on the Buena Park location, which is the only one in Orange County. It was reported briefly that Downtown Disney was adding the bakery to its culinary repertoire – but there are rumors swirling the plans have been cancelled (according to DIS Disney Discussion forums).

And yes! Bathrooms are available!

Parking for Porto’s

Every Porto’s location has free parking in a dedicated lot. However, while the lots tend to have a ton of spots, it can be difficult to find parking due to the high volume of traffic visiting each bakery.

You may need to drive around bit or be patient – a spot will open up for you (it just might take a minute or two). Some lucky souls report finding things right away. Personally, I’m not one of the fortunate few and I definitely play the waiting game.

The Best Time to Visit Porto’s

Porto’s is busy…at almost every time of day. So, regardless of when you plan your trip, brace yourself for a bit of crowding. That being said, getting there closer to opening (and during the work week) will help you beat the rush. And if you do need to wait in line before getting into the building, just know everything moves quickly. Porto’s staff are well-trained and experienced at handling large crowds.

What do they serve?

The Porto’s menu can roughly be broken down into three different sections (with three dedicated counters within the building):

  • Bakery (with pastries galore)
  • Cafe (for all your caffeine needs)
  • Deli/prepare foods section (where you can grab lunch)

When you first enter the Buena Park location, there is a team member at the door that automatically directs you to the Bakery counter (since most people usually visit for baked goods). If you’re not planning on getting anything from the bakery, just let them know you want to order sandwiches or drinks and they can point you to the right place.

The Bakery

The most popular counter at Porto’s, the bakery has all the pastries (both sweet and savory) you could want. While you can’t go wrong, an absolute must-try are the potato balls (or papa rellena). I also adore anything with guava.

The Cafe

As a coffeeshop-fan, this is my personal favorite stop when I’m in a treat-yourself mood. The cafe has a wide selection of espresso-based beverages, teas, juices, and more. The Dulce de Leche latte was a special surprise. But they also offer an horchata cold brew and cortadito – among other things!

Deli

The deli counter has a full array of sandwiches and ready-to-eat meals. The Cubano is a winner if you’re in the mood for something hearty. My personal favorite is the Feta & Heirloom Tomato sandwich.
