A Summer Walk Through an Autumnal Redwood Grove

It was an unexpectedly cool summer morning when I arrived at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. As though walking through a curtain of mist, I headed out on the trail in search of Southern California’s Redwood Grove for a bit of location scouting in Orange County.

Thoreau had a fascination with and awe for trees – in fact, he is known for writing about the nobility of pine trees in particular. And if trees are to be considered noble, then redwoods would definitely be kings of the plant court.

After walking along some typical, but beautiful, Southern California trails I reached the beginning of the grove. Gathered in bunches, with a clearing for visitors to walk through stood these giant and towering trees. It’s hard to say, but this next photo – of the trees parting – may be my favorite of the bunch.

Beyond the grove, the park had other flora and fauna (there was a hawak perched nearby but my camera was too slow) . The colors were vibrant and dreamy – a bit of Autumn in the beginning of Summer.

Carbon Canyon is a beautiful photography location. On this trip, I focused on capturing the feel of the land, but it would make for a lovely backdrop for portraits – perhaps on my next trip!
